Ofrivilliga, De / Involuntary

Five parallel stories told almost dogma style, camera angles with awkward perspectives showing people in even more awkward social situations. I saw this at Biopalatset in central Gothenburg on a Saturday evening in an even tinier screen than the one on Friday evening. Seeing these films without subtitles put a lot of strain on my language [...]

Låt den rätte komma in / Let the right one in

Lina Leandersson pictured in this Swedish vampire flic which I saw in one of the smaller screens albeit a packed one in a multiplex in Gothenburg on a Friday evening. Some people are tipping this film for Oscar gold. It reminded me of some Japanese stuff I have seen. A sudden closeup shot of the [...]

Den du frygter (Fear me not)

Stine Stengade (pictured) plays a supporting role in this psychological drama from Denmark also filmed in the Czech republic featuring product placement for Netto and Heineken.

RAB NE BANA DI JODI

Priyanka Chopra (pictured) in a Bollywood extravaganza Christmas release. Played to a full house of mostly young people on opening night (Friday). A real song and dance. Will she pick ultra nerd or mister disco inferno? Wait aren’t they the same guy?

Dean Spanley

Charlotte Graham (pictured) in this costume? drama filmed entirely on location in ‘East of England’, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk. New Zealand film commission piece with post production down under. Peter O’Toole with some funny moments.

Noodle

Mili Avital (pictured) in Noodle an Israeli piece from 2007 I saw at the film club in London today before I came back to Birmingham and after a day in Cambridge.
An illegal chinese worker leaves her son with her employers for what is supposed to be an hour and turns into a longer sojourn. What [...]

Transporter 3

Was this a computer game? I don’t know I don’t play computer games. At first I thought it was cut like a bad tv commercial but then I thought this is starting to look like the Matrix with all the Kung Fu stunts. Jason Statham is really great at his world weary dead pan self. [...]

The Express

I don’t know where else this movie is playing I didn’t hear any advance press on it and it  only has two showings a day at the cineplex. I thought it was an amazing story of an all american footballer the first black athlete to win the Heisman trophy. Maybe it was just too schmaltzy [...]

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

I didn’t see the first one of these but I think I get it. Some guy from Friends was narrating. The penguins were hysterically funny and a couple of other subplot characters as well. The main story yeah well the kids will love it and at 90 minutes it’s not too much to ask.

Heavy Metal in Baghdad

I want to be in a band Baghdad style. I ran into a couple of kneejerk anti-american former classmates from last years French class (where else?) in the lobby of the Electric Birmingham who were also going in to see this film. As they couldn’t find anything else bad to say about it they took [...]
